A useless nut? People here in Ohio are obsessed with Buckeyes. This is evident by our state nickname, the State tree, assorted sports teams - some with very fervent supporters (OH-IO!) and our club.
The Buckeye nut is a glossy maroon with a cream coloured patch making it resemble the eye of a deer. The seed is not edible but the appearance of the nuts was the inspiration for Buckeye candy which combines the flavors of Peanut Butter and Chocolate.

These kind of Buckeyes are most definitely edible. Just keep the chocolate away from the dogs!

  • 1 1/2 cups peanut butter
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 6 cups confectioners'
    sugar
  • 4 cups semisweet
    chocolate chips

Directions Mix the peanut butter, butter, vanilla and confectioners' sugar into a crumbly dough. Roll into 1 inch balls and place on a waxed paper-lined cookie sheet.
Press a toothpick into the top of each ball (to be used later as a handle for dipping) and chill in freezer until firm. Melt the chocolate and dip each frozen peanut butter ball in chocolate by holding the toothpick, leaving a small portion of peanut butter showing at the top to make them look like buckeyes.

Put back on the cookie sheet and refridgerate until serving.
